Worship at St. Peter What should I expect if I worship at St. Peter? At St. Peter we value the historic, traditional liturgy of the church. From the earliest times of the Church, Christians worshiped Christ using a liturgy: a set pattern of worship. St. Justin Martyr (b. 100 AD) records that the Christians worshiped beginning with a service around the Word of God (the sermon), and ending with a service around the Sacrament of the Eucharist (or Lord's Supper). We still follow that pattern today. What liturgy and hymnal do you use? Our worship follows Setting One of the Lutheran Book of Worship. This infamous liturgical setting is still used today in various Lutheran hymnals and introduced the now well-known hymn of praise: "Worthy is Christ" or " This is the Feast." I'm not familiar with your service. How will I know what to do? In order to help you follow along, we have clearly laid out our service in the bulletin so that you know what pages to be on and when to sit and stand. If you just want to watch, that's okay too! All that matters is that you are here to receive God's grace. Where does all this liturgy come from? Almost all the liturgy in the service are passages from Holy Scripture set to music. Even the words "the Lord be with you" come from the book of Ruth. (Ruth 2:4) Do I need to dress up for church? While it is always good and appropriate to look our best as we worship before God, you are welcome to wear whatever have. Many in our congregation wear shorts or jeans on Sunday. |
